The 80/20 Rule

1. Charge to 80%, not 100%. Lithium-ion cells degrade fastest at the extremes. Keeping your charge between 20% and 80% can extend your e-bike battery life by up to 30%. A full charge is fine before a long ride — just don't leave it sitting at 100% for days.

2. Don't drain it to zero. Running the battery flat stresses the cells. Plug in when you hit 20%. If you finished a ride at 5%, charge it as soon as you can.

3. Use the right charger. That aftermarket charger online might be cheaper — but it can also deliver the wrong voltage and cook your battery management system. Stick with the charger that came with your electric bike.

Temperature Matters

4. Cold kills range, not the battery. Riding at 0°C can cut your range by 20–40%. That's normal and temporary. What actually damages the battery is charging it when it's still freezing. Let the battery warm up indoors for 2–3 hours before plugging in.

5. Never store it in direct sun. A locked shed in summer can hit 40°C+. High heat permanently degrades lithium cells. Store your battery indoors, in a cool dry spot, between 10°C and 25°C.

6. Use lower assist levels. Riding at the highest assist level is fun, but it pulls more current and generates more heat inside the cells. Eco mode on flats can nearly double your range and puts less strain on the battery.

7. Shift before you need it. Grinding up a hill in too high a gear forces the motor to work harder and draw more power. Drop a gear early, keep your cadence up, and let the motor spin efficiently.

Storage & Long-Term Care

8. For long storage, keep it at 40–60%. If you're parking your electric bike for winter, don't leave the battery full or empty. 40–60% is the sweet spot. Check it once a month — if it's dropped below 20%, give it a short top-up.
